Sentence Building Level 5
Sentence Building Level 5 consists of sentence-combining strategies that give students oral and written practice in creating effective sentences that are more mature than the ones that they create independently. Oral practice signals the creation of sentence patterns until they become second nature to the students (their minds produce them automatically). Written practice helps the sentence patterns transfer to the written (or encoding) ability of students. The practiced sentence patterns will then start showing up in students' independent writing.
Sentence Building 5 begins by reviewing simple sentences with compound elements, then the rearrangement of simple, positive, declarative sentences in a variety of other kinds of sentences. It then moves to combining sentence-parts and simple sentences into compound, complex and compound-complex sentences.
