Math Journal Course 1 - Grades 6 & up

course oneWriting to Win Math Journals use seven journal strategies to help students articulate with precision what they are learning in math lessons. The strategies are explained concisely in the introduction, and each promotes different critical-thinking patterns.

The remainder of the journal provides a journal prompt for each of 180 days of a typical school year. The scope & sequence follows that of major published textbooks and satisfies the national standards of NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics). One journal strategy is introduced and practiced before a second is introduced, then the strategies are varied to insure variety in writing experiences and suitability to specific math topics. There are two journal entries on each page with space for an optional journal prompt. We encourage teachers to change the content of the topic prompt, but to use the same strategy if at all possible.

The journal is divided into 8 sections of 22 entries with a Log of Entries preceding each section. The log serves as a paper trail of what students have used for a 4½-week instructional period. It helps students see at a glance what they have met in class and gives them immediate access to each entry in that section. The Log of Entries also provides easy access for teachers as they review students' growing ability to "talk math" with precision.
